Putin, Erdogan pledge to continue supporting Libyan national unity government – Russian Politics & Diplomacy

MOSCOW, May 5. / TASS /. Russia and Turkey will continue to support the efforts of the government of national unity in Libya, taking into account the interests of the main political forces and regions of the country, the Kremlin press service informed on Wednesday after a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Turkish authorities. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“During the discussion on the situation in Libya, [the presidents] agreed to continue to support the efforts of the government of national unity to strengthen the unity of the country taking into account the interests of the main political forces and regions, ”the message said.

Until recently, Libya had two parallel bodies of executive power: the Government of National Accord (GNA) led by Fayez al-Sarraj in Tripoli, and an interim government operating in the east of the country with parliament and supported by the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Commander Khalifa Haftar. Forces from both sides engaged in protracted clashes until a ceasefire agreement was signed in October 2020 in Geneva.

At the beginning of February, on the results of the talks launched last year, the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Switzerland elected Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh as Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity in Libya, as well as the three members of the Presidential Council.

The main objective of the new government bodies in Tripoli is to unite the disparate structures across the country and to prepare and organize the presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya on December 24.
